Jaguar is about to join the ranks of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and other luxury brands in downsizing its powerplants. All of its models currently sold in the U.S. market are powered by some variation of the 5.0-liter direct-injection V-8, either in supercharged or naturally-aspirated form. But if the brand’s announcement in Beijing is any indication, we may soon see six and even four-cylinder engines under the hood of future U.S.-bound Jaguars.
The V-6 is a 3.0-liter with direct-injection and supercharging, and will be offered in two power levels, 340 and 380 hp. Although not explicitly stated in the release, if you read between the lines, the supercharged V-6 could ultimately replace the naturally-aspirated 5.0 V-8 in some models. According to the official release, the engine “will offer comparable levels of power and refinement to the naturally-aspirated version of the V8 engine, but with greater specific output and efficiency courtesy of supercharging.”
