BMW Reveals Details on New U.S.-Spec                                
3  Series  Wagon

BMW has just released updates on the upcoming 3 Series wagon with details on the powertrain and transmission offerings. A few months ago, BMW confirmed it would sell the new 3 Series wagon in the United States, but specifics were slim.

As expected, the engine will be the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that also powers the 328i sedan (power output remains at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque). That engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters available as an option. The new wagon will offer a number of driving modes including an ECO PRO mode, which adjusts accelerator mapping and transmissions shifts for maximum fuel efficiency. Additionally, ECO PRO mode includes displays on the instrument cluster to show fuel consumption info and tips on driving more efficiently. BMW claims this new mode can net up to a 20-percent reduction in fuel consumption.

So what about the six-speed manual and the N55 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six? A BMW spokesman wasn’t willing to comment or confirm either options. He also wasn’t willing to confirm a diesel option, but stated that anything is possible. The previous generation 3 Series was offered with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6 with a power rating of 265 hp and 425 lb-ft that could pair nicely with the new wagon (and sedan).

For added convenience, the rear cargo area can be accessed by opening the hatch or just the window portion. The window can be opened by pressing a small button on the rear wiper and should come in handy when loading smaller items (dogs should love it, too). Additionally, the hatch will feature hands-free operation by simply sticking your foot under the bumper (with the optional Comfort Access package).

The wagon is still scheduled to arrive here in spring 2013.

BMW Art Car Collection

For the first time ever, the BMW Art Car Collection will be displayed in the UK. The exhibit, which runs from July 21 to August 4 at the London 2012 Festival in Shoreditch, will include BMW art cars by artists including Andy Warhol and David Hockney.
