BMW starts work on 1-Series sedan

BMW starts work on 1-Series sedan; to launch in 2015

Based on the 1-Series hatch, the four-door model will cater the needs of those looking for a sporty compact sedan.
BMW’s ultimate aim of selling two million cars a year by 2020 is in full force. Having set such an ambitious target, BMW like its German counterparts Audi and Mercedes-Benz is looking to roll out a slew of new entry-level models for the masses, which are expected to debut in the global market in the next few years.

And in this endeavor, BMW has already announced its plans to make the coupe and the convertible versions of the upcoming 2-Series. However, now we hear that the German automaker is also busy developing a new baby sedan based on the 1-Series premium hatch. This new four-door sedan will share nearly everything under the skin with its hatchback sibling, including the range of four and six cylinder engines.

The 1-Series sedan will take on other compact sedans, namely the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz CLA (also currently under development) However, in true BMW fashion, power will be sent to the rear wheels unlike the front-wheel driven A3 and CLA.

All of these cars when launched globally, will be priced under Rs 20 lakh mark, making them good value. In spite of that, there is little chance of such cars making it to our shores as the high import duties would make them too expensive for our liking.
